Mapping of ICT Functional Skills KS4

Mapping to KS4 POS

Key Processes

Functional skills level 2

National Strategy Framework Y10

2.1 Finding Information

Students should be able to:

a analyse systematically the information requirements to solve a range of problems

b scope the information flow required to develop an ICT-based solution

c select appropriate information from a wide range of sources, showing discrimination in their choices and judging the value, accuracy, plausibility

and bias of information

d explore, develop and interpret information to produce solutions that meet

user needs

e evaluate critically and justify information choices and act on feedback from

others where appropriate.

Use ICT Systems:

1.2 Select and use a communication service to access the internet

1.3 Select and use software applications to meet needs and solve problems

2.1 Use ICT effectively to plan work and review the effectiveness of ICT tools to meet needs in order to inform future judgements.

Find and select information:

1.1 select and use appropriate sources of ICT based and other forms of information which match requirements.

2.3 use discrimination in selecting information that matches requirements form a variety of sources and evaluate the fitness for purpose.

1.1 Using data and information sources.

  • recognise that the types of information sources they use and how they present these has an impact on different users, and that the source should be questioned for its relevance and value

1.2 Searching and selecting.

  • develop and justify appropriate information-capture systems for others to use

  • independently select appropriate information from a wide range of sources for a specific task, taking account of their ease of use

  • identify the advantages and limitations of different information-handling applications and information sources in relation to the needs of the user

  • develop systems and files to aid others in searching for and selecting information

  • carefully consider search results and review the interpretation of data for other users

  • acknowledge both primary and secondary sources and the need to obtain copyright permission

2.2 Developing Ideas

Students should be able to:

a develop efficient and effective ICT-based solutions to a range of problems

for themselves and others

b select and use, with increasing integration and efficiency, the appropriate

ICT tools for given problems

c independently explore, develop and interpret increasingly complex ICT-based information to solve problems

d use ICT safely and responsibly

e critically evaluate and justify the choice of ICT tools and act on feedback

from others where appropriate.

2.1 access, navigate and search internet sources of information purposefully and effectively.

2.2 use appropriate search techniques and design queries to locate and select relevant information,

2.3 use discrimination in selecting information that matches requirements form a variety of sources and evaluate the fitness for purpose.

Develop, present and communicate information

3.2 Produce information that is fit for purpose and audience using accepted layout and conventions as appropriate

4.2 Review and modify work as it progresses to ensure the result is fit for purpose and audience and to inform future judgements.

1.1 Using data and information sources.

  • recognise that the types of information sources they use and how they present these has an impact on different users, and that the source should be questioned for its relevance and value
  • develop and justify appropriate information-capture systems for others to use

1.3 Organising and investigating

  • develop validation within systems and understand the need for conversion of responses to make them fit to process

  • use the system life cycle to plan an information system, taking account of feedback at the various stages

  • produce a data structure to enhance efficiency; create a range of validation checks to ensure a viable data set when developing a data system, and explain the features which make it efficient

  • identify the link between flat-file databases, their interrogation and the overarching purpose of the investigation

  • represent information in different forms and integrate information from different ICT tools to produce an effective solution

  • show an awareness of safety issues in the planning and implementation of their work

  • create a specification and plan against this, documenting the process throughout

2 Developing ideas:

  • use automation, where appropriate, to support users of a system; recognise the benefits of planning for automation within the process of scoping a system

  • design or develop a complex model to meet a need, identifying appropriate assumptions, variables and rules

  • list, describe and justify the input, process, and output characteristics of a model

  • create complex models to solve a problem

  • identify criteria to test whether a model is fit for purpose

  • use variables to create increasingly complex systems

  • plan the integration of sequences of instructions with other elements to form an ICT system

4 Evaluating

  • compare and contrast the effects on a system of combining different ICT tools in different ways
  • apply prior learning in their work and understand how it has improved their work

2.3 Communicating information

Students should be able to:

a use a range of ICT tools and media to share, exchange and present information effectively in a variety of contexts

b create quality solutions that show they have considered how the information should be interpreted and presented in forms that

suit audience, purpose and content

c communicate and exchange information (including digital communication)

safely, responsibly and securely.

Develop, present and communicate information:

1.1 Enter, organise, develop, refine and format information, applying editing techniques to meet needs

1.2 Use appropriate page layout. Enter, organise, develop, refine and format information, applying editing techniques to meet needs

1.3 Enter and format text to maximise clarity and enhance presentation

1.5 Obtain, insert, size, crop and position images that are fit for purpose

1.6 Enter, develop and organise numerical information that is fit for purpose

1.7 Format numerical information appropriately

1.8 create and develop charts and graphs to suit the numerical data, using suitable labels.

1.9 Enter, organise, select and edit records using fields names and headings, data types, unique record identifier where appropriate.

2.1 Bring together and organise components of images and text

2.2 Organise information of different forms or from different sources to achieve a purpose.

3.2 Produce information that is fit for purpose and audience using accepted layout and conventions as appropriate.

4.1 evaluate the effectiveness of ICT tools to meet needs,

3 Communicating Information:

  • produce solutions that are accessible for any user: solutions that recognise accessibility issues and apply the conventions relating to digital media

  • use feedback from the audience to inform the development of their digital communications

  • combine ICT tools to input, process and output information to meet the needs of a user

  • scope the range of information required to develop an automated interactive communication system

  • refine the use of tools to create an efficient communication system to facilitate collaboration

  • describe the moral, social, legal and ethical issues relating to digital communication and the sharing of information, and apply them when communicating in a responsible, safe and secure manner

2.4 Evaluating

Students should be able to:

a review, modify and evaluate work as it progresses, reflecting critically and responding to user feedback

b evaluate the effectiveness of their own and others’ ICT-based solutions, using the results to improve the quality of their work and to inform

future work.

Use ICT systems.:

1.3 Select and use software applications to meet needs and solve problems

1.6 Use ICT to effectively plan work and review the effectiveness of ICT tools to meet needs in order to inform future judgements

Develop, present and communicate information:

4.1 evaluate the effectiveness of ICT tools to meet needs,

4.2 Review and modify work as it progresses to ensure the result is fit for purpose and audience and to inform future judgements.

4 Evaluating:

  • compare and contrast the effects on a system of combining different ICT tools in different ways

  • devise and review complex success criteria to modify and develop their work as it progresses; pupils recognise the need to interpret end-user requirements into the system's success criteria

  • consider other related tasks and problems in order to define the increasing scope of their ICT solution

  • plan and implement a testing regime that incorporates trials with users, and use the information gathered to refine their work in a discriminating way

  • apply prior learning in their work and understand how it has improved their work
